Congratulations to members of the Australian Education Union – Northern Territory Branch!
At the recent state conference, members passed the following motion:
The AEU NT Branch Conference calls on the Department of Education and Training to establish a policy regarding sponsorship of school programs by harmful industries. Any programs sponsored or partnered by companies involved in the sale, promotion, or manufacturing of weapons should not be permitted to run programs in schools.
The NT education department is, overall, an outlier on the regulation of corporate partnerships in education: NT sponsorship policies don’t recognise the need to prevent harmful industries from marketing to children at school.
The endorsement of this motion is a great step forward, a credit to AEU NT members, and further evidence of the growing awareness of the harm of the weapons industry.
